Introduction – Above the Water

When I started in this area thirty years ago, little was known about food hypersensitivities. This module would have been short back then! Thankfully, our knowledge has grown substantially in the last few decades.

Even though we have a reasonable understanding of the “above the water” conditions, there is still a lot to learn (i.e., most of the knowledge is still below the surface). New research is constantly expanding our understanding of these conditions.

Two crucial points to keep in mind are:

  • If a client experiences the condition differently than most (i.e., a celiac client that is more sensitive than the typical client), they may have an atypical presentation that we do not yet understand.
  • These conditions are distinct, but further research will likely show how many overlap.

In each lesson, I provide an overview of the condition – focusing on the big picture and practical counselling tips. I have listed references in Additional Resources if you want to take a deeper dive.
