Introduction – Welcome to the Grey Zone

Food sensitivity (FS) is a challenging area of practice. We have evidence-based guidelines for a few conditions (e.g., celiac disease, food anaphylaxis), but most people seek help for more ambiguous concerns that do not have concrete research or practice guidelines. I call this the FS grey zone. Many healthcare providers (HCPs) do not know how to help these clients and, out of frustration,  dismiss their concerns. On the other hand, other professionals may provide questionable diagnoses and recommendations that initially satisfy the client’s desire for answers but erode their body and food trust, leading to long-term problems. As a result, grey zone clients rarely get the help they need to improve their quality of life.

The FS grey zone is a rewarding practice area because we can make a significant difference in the lives of clients who have been struggling.
