Helping Clients Soften Food Sensitivity Fear

Dietary restriction driven by food sensitivity fear is common. Understandably, clients often focus on biological explanations and may not recognize the significant role that fear and learned associations between food and illness can play.

The Conditioned Food Avoidance and Sensitivity Theory (C-FAST) is a model that shows how food restriction, fear, and worsening symptoms can become a vicious cycle.

This interactive presentation explores practical, compassionate communication strategies that help health professionals broaden client conversations to include psychosocial factors related to food restriction. Participants will learn to:

  • Identify clients who may be stuck in the C-FAST cycle.
  • Discuss the C-FAST cycle in clear, respectful language.
  • Create effective, collaborative diet expansion plans.
  • Examine multidisciplinary team roles and scope of practice.
